The blogger writing at Pound Of Thoughts talks about Harry Potter

Does God say anything about “watching” or “reading about” witchcraft? Well, I can’t really find anything on “observing” witchcraft - which is what one does when you read about it being performed or “see” it in a movie.

But, those of you Christians that think it’s okay to let your kids read these books, well, that worries me. Would you let your kids read pornography? Satanism books? “How to Murder” books? Let me put this question to you - Why did J.K. Rowling use witchcraft to tell her story? If she wanted to include Christian themes, why write about something that God clearly teaches against?

I remember watching Bewitched at my Great Aunt’s house growing up. My aunt belonged to a very conservative independent Baptist church (SBC too liberal for them). She still let me watch Bewitched. Believe it or not, the show never caused me to convert to Wicca. Those visions of Samantha in that miniskirt though, certainly had an effect on me. Nicole Kidman was totally a babe in the movie version, but she couldn’t hold a candle to Elizabeth Montgomery. Oh wait, this post is about Harry Potter. Sorry!

Seriously though, I wonder how the poster feels about “Lord of the Rings”.

Kat,

Thanks! :) I just want to say that I have enjoyed reading everybody’s comments on my post…It has been very intriguing getting everybody’s opinions. I wanted to see what other people thought, and I think it worked. ;) I don’t necessarily equate Harry Potter with porn, either, I just wanted to “pick” some brains.

I read the “Masthead”, and I want to applaud y’all on what you guys are doing, getting the local blogs together and forming the virtual community. I kind of consider Nashville as an adopted home now, and I wish that my area would do what y’all have done!

Best of luck with the community, and I look forward to more of your posts!

Hi, Glen Dean…Like you, I have watched Bewitched also (both the series and the movie). I have also read “Lord of the Rings” and “Chronicles of Narnia.” I have watched all four of the “Harry Potter” movies (although I do confess I have not read the books).

First off, I will agree with you that none of those have pushed me into the occult. In reading the books (Narnia and Rings), I did see the subtle, underlying Christian basis that both Tolkien and Lewis used, albeit Lewis was more obvious than Tolkien.

However, their books also did not use any incantations or invocations of witchcraft (although Gandalf was a wizard and “Narnia” did have a white witch). Personally, I think it’s all in the spirit in which you take it. Approach it light-heartedly and not take it seriously, and it won’t affect you.

Having said that, there are some people out there that will take it seriously. I think that’s where the danger lies with “Harry Potter” more than “Narnia” or “Rings”. Rowling incorporates actual witchcraft practices, like divination, where Tolkien and Lewis do not.

What a dumb@$$.

What about the Wizard of Oz? Sinful?

What about the Narnia books? Didn’t they have magic?

Grimm’s Fairy tales? Pinnochio? That blogger is stupid.

S&F:

Whereas you are brilliant? You can’t even discuss without resorting to euphemisms and expletives.

I would even venture to guess that you didn’t read my entire post.

Glen Dean on 9 July, 2007 at 10:24 am #

Fair enough Eric.

BTW Kat,

I like this site! Even though I’m not from the Music City, I’ll have to add it to my blogroll!

Is this site from the creators of NiT?

Mike D on 9 July, 2007 at 10:42 am #

Unfortunately, the poster undermined her credibility at “I was watching John Hagee the other day…”

Eric, there are some earlier posts on the MCB that cover the last couple weeks of Nashville blogging news.

Kat Coble on 9 July, 2007 at 10:42 am #

Well, I like Harry Potter and I like Eric, so I’m not going to necessarily take sides.

I do want to say that I disagree with most of what Eric says EXCEPT that I do think if Christian parents are uncomfortable with the books, then by all means they have that right of course.

I just don’t think Harry Potter is the same thing as porn. At all. ;-p

We have you on our blogroll, I think. ;-p I consider you a “cousin” of Music City.

We’re not from the creators of NiT…we’re more from the community of NiT.

There’s an earlier post here which explains everything.

Read what you want.
But let me read what I want.

Squirrel Queen on 9 July, 2007 at 9:43 pm #

I think we should encourage reading at every level.
If a child picks up a Potter book because of the hype, maybe it willhelp them develop a greater love of reading, which could in turn help them read, evaluate and understand the Bible better.

Squirrel Queen on 9 July, 2007 at 9:46 pm #

And I add,
Help them better understand any religious tract, whatever faith it may represent, or any text book.
Reading is fundamental, not necessarily fundamentally Christian.

Reading is fundamental, not necessarily fundamentally Christian.

As good as that line is, you were better off to have left it at “…which could in turn help them read, evaluate and understand the Bible better.”

IMO. It’s just more wryly funny that way.

But WTFDIK?
.

i let my kids read harry potter, but i’m afraid to let my kids read the bible in fear that they’ll try to walk on water and drown.
