A couple of years ago when it looked like the Vandy football team was going to have a winning season, I expressed that belief to my friend Rob. He turned slowly, and in all seriousness, replied, ‘Just remember, they’ll always break your heart’. He was right. After 40+ years of following the Black and Gold, there’s really not a lot of highlights. Sure, beating UT a couple of years ago was good for a warm glow for six months, but last year it was back to normal when the Vols drubbed the Commodores.
Vanderbilt has come up with more creative ways to lose a football game than John McCain has come up with to blow his nomination.
Another Rob (Rob Robinson of thinktrain) links to a story in the City Paper that claims Vandy is going to a bowl this year. Rob wants to believe. I want to believe also, but the words of my other friend Rob never completely leave my memory. Vandy fans have to go with their heart, and Rob’s heart is ready!
Damn Gary Barnett.
If Northwestern hadn’t gone to the Rose Bowl a few years back, giving hope to all small private schools in football university conferences, we wouldn’t have this false hope.
Two years ago, we had the greatest QB in school history, and couldn’t beat MTSU or Kentucky. Last year, I thought Nickson would be our Tee Martin, leading us to the promised land after the superstar failed to deliver. Close, but no cigar.
They’ll be good this year, for Vandy. Probably get 5 wins, and then lose to KY and UT again.
I’ve been through this drill before. Remember the botched extra point against LSU, the fake punt against Georgia?
One day, they actually will get back to the Peach Bowl. Then I can die in peace.
Hutchmo, for a moment there, I thought I was your “friend Rob,” too, because the “They’ll always break your heart” refrain is all too familiar to me. Then I remembered that I’ve only known you about six months.
I’m more than willing to have the ‘Dores prove us all wrong this fall, though!
Slarti, thanks for that trip down heartbreak row. The one that kills me most is the VU fumble within field goal range in the final minute against Kentucky around ‘99 or so. Win that game, and the bowl drought would only be eight years, not 25. Aargh.
Didn’t VU almost beat Florida last year or the year before? Now THAT would have been interesting.
“Vanderbilt has come up with more creative ways to lose a football game than John McCain has come up with to blow his nomination.”
Priceless …
BCM
Yes, they’ve nearly beaten Florida the past two years, including a 2-OT loss in Gainesville.
McCain even loses the battle of losers you mentioned. Vanderbilt has decades of practice.
I always went to or listened to every Vandy game, period. I decided I must be jinxing them by wanting them to win so badly that I thought it might help if I stopped listening or going. It didn’t. They still win and lose with regularity at both ends of the spectrum no matter what I did. Rooting for my Vandy is like having a kidney stone, the run for glory is going to involve pain.
Vandy always “almost” beats people. It is pretty sad. I would love to see them in a bowl though.
