Aunt B.

[E]ven if a lack of going to college is linked directly to obesity, it’s not the fat chicks’ faults. There are things that are often a direct result of being obese. You are obese; you can’t get the seat belt on an airplane to buckle around you. Cause and effect.

But–you are obese; you don’t go to college? No.

That’s other people making you feel bad about yourself because you don’t meet some arbitrary beauty standard and making you feel like you aren’t worthy of attending college. That’s not actually a problem with the fat chick; that’s a problem for the fat chick.

Me

The part that got me right between the eyes was when Ms. Dress Form began to talk about her roommate.

“I don’t know who it is. My mom said I’ll probably get stuck with some fat twerp. Which would be bad, because I run every morning.”

Now, pardon me, but that whole sentence struck me as about the equivalent of saying “I’ll probably get stuck with some n—-r. Which would be bad because I don’t eat watermelon.”

Clearly it appears that many in the college world have some sort of No Fat Chicks policy. Take the Delta Zeta sorority at DePauw for instance.

Does this bug anybody else?

I am particularly bitter about this issue, because I developed a binge eating disorder as a teenager and was obese when I started college. I lost 80 pounds my sophomore year of college, and met my husband for the first time two years later. I had, unfortunately, met many of his fraternity brothers before – not that any of them recognized me when he reintroduced me. Nothing like someone being a dick to you for no damn reason and then treating you like a person later because you finally meet their ridiculous, shallow standard.

That’s why I’m a dick to everyone.

Having sat through and participated in many sorority rush and evaluation sessions, I can tell you right now, that most people have no idea how vicious and cruel it can get. It was an eye opening experience.

Don’t kill the messenger here-but the DZ thing at DePauw doesn’t surprise me a bit.
