Bear Creek Ledger tells us the real reason gas prices are high.

Enviromental groups driving regulations. Congress, through the influence of enviro lobbying groups, has regulated ourselves out of the business of refining crude. The same thing applies to drilling for oil domestically. There’s plenty of crude in the US plus there’s coal gasification which could be utilized. But nooooooo, they have to mandate ethanol which is currently causing the price of corn to go through the roof which will drive all level of food prices.

Absolutely. No refinery built in the last 30 years, no new oil exploration in the United States, boutique gasoline, a government that subsidizes corn ethanol, no nuclear power plants.

So which is worse for America, big oil or a government that buys into the global warming hoax?

Yeah — record high oil company profits are just a side-effect of those wacko moonbat policies.

You finally have something right Jiffy.

# 9 on 2 August, 2007 at 4:17 pm #

Yeah — record high oil company profits are just a side-effect of those wacko moonbat policies.

Who cares how much money big oil makes? They make a smaller profit margin than almost any company. Oil companies make 10 cents per gallon on refined gasoline. Ruby Tuesdays makes around 40 percent profit margin on a fatburger. Where is your outrage about that?

We need fuel to run and protect the country. Does your motor scooter run on good feelings? Grow up. We would have cheaper gas if we had more refineries. But noooo, liberals who are more concerned about good feelings prevented the new refineries. No matter what happens you bitch about both sides of the equation. What does that say about your ability to understand economics, national security, and fueling this country.

Wacko moonbat policies are the reason this country is so fucked up.

Katherine Coble on 2 August, 2007 at 4:42 pm #

It bothers me that Toni says EnviroMENTAL like she’s being very cute but then also misspells it.

Does your motor scooter run on good feelings?

With most people I’d say “no”, but with JP, there’s no tellin.

Yeah — record high oil company profits are just a side-effect of those wacko moonbat policies.

Just because you seem to have a philosophical difference with the concept of making enough money to live on doesn’t mean that the rest of the world needs to follow suit.

Once again, in English, please?

Record high gasoline prices and record high oil company profits: Merely a coincidence! Go back to sleep, America!

It is an economic and not a regulatory problem. The OPEC Reference Basket, used to control production, was formerly was in the $22-28/barrel range. However, since 2004, for various reasons including the flagging U.S. Dollar to which the basket was previously indexed, the target range now is more in the $60/barrel range. http://www.opec.org/home/basket.aspx

The reason for the push for ethanol, which is a poor decision in my opinion, is an attempt to gain “energy independence”. Only secondarily would anyone say that ethanol is an environmental benefit. It is obvious the economic impact of pressure on corn prices far outweighs any benefit we get from E85, etal.

Glen, could you do SOME research before posting politically-motivated tripe?

Jeffraham Prestonian on 2 August, 2007 at 5:33 pm #

The reason for the push for ethanol, which is a poor decision in my opinion, is an attempt to gain votes in red states, by both parties.
-
Fixed your typo.

alison on 2 August, 2007 at 6:13 pm #

i’m no expert, but my dad is a chemical guy, and is constantly hammering into my head that there is more ethanol in gas in the summer for pollution reasons, which causes not only gas to be a little higher but higher ethanol consumption as well. hopefully sooner than later ethanol will be made more from switchgrass than corn. isn’t there a big switchgrass movement here in TN?

now, he could be wrong, or i could be completely retarded and not relaying the info right (both are highly possible), but that seems to be the centrist ideal.

not that i’m condoning big oil’s shady dealings in any way. but i guess SOMEONE out there has to make 40 billion in profit a quarter eh? and if it can’t be me, why not big oil?

and for those out there who can’t take a joke, that was one.

Paul Nicholson on 2 August, 2007 at 6:21 pm #

Oh joy, one more blog site (MCB) with political rhetoric flying around. Gee, we don’t have enough of those.

Community site.

Political site.

Both sides, please take your rhetoric elsewhere (like, oh say…your own blogs) and please leave MCB as the community forum that it is. People who want to argue and spew rhetoric can visit your sites. Please leave someplace undisturbed so i can ‘hang out’ with my online friends without feeling dirty.

(And i don’t just mean the right. i generally lean right myself, but i’m mostly just fed up with both sides and would like a place to just read blogs and community news in peace)

Southern Beale on 2 August, 2007 at 6:31 pm #

Yeah cuz we all know how much power and influence ENVIRONMENTALISTS have in Washington! The fact that the entire Bush Administration has connections to the oil industry has NOTHING to do with it.

And as for “I lean right” Paul, politics IS part of community. If you don’t like the political posts, don’t read them. There’s plenty of non-political content here. You can always tell the folks who “lean right” — they’re usually the ones who want to control the content of everyone’s media to suit their own narrow views of what’s acceptable.

Shhhhh! Let WATBs be WATBs.

That was uncalled for and any more comments like that which are direct personal attacks will be deleted. This one is staying up as a warning.

Cause, yeah, I know what WATB stands for.

Jeffraham Prestonian on 2 August, 2007 at 8:38 pm #

Know why I come here?

So I can read “Blowing Smoke: A movie about poker, cigars, women, and getting screwed
Madonna in whore shock,” and not feel all dirty-like, since it’s a Music City blog.
-

Katherine Coble on 2 August, 2007 at 8:41 pm #

Well, if we can put up with you turning 99% of all comment threads into your far-left jibberish, you can put up with seeing the occasional non-local blogger in the aggregator.

-

Which, as I may point out, you have been an incredibly whiny-assed titty baby about.

Jeffraham Prestonian on 2 August, 2007 at 8:43 pm #

JP, considering the success of “Nashville Was Talking” you might want to reconsider your approach. How many Nashville blogs to you plan to infect with your affliction? I would hope a short course of Prozac might possibly clear that up. You offend even my cat. Which is very disturbing.

Jeffraham Prestonian on 2 August, 2007 at 8:56 pm #

KatCo, I think #9 needs some authoritarian delete-action. That sure sounded like a personal attack, to me.
.

Katherine Coble on 2 August, 2007 at 9:05 pm #

I didn’t delete yours and I’m not gonna delete his.
-

If it keeps up, I will. And I will further delete anymore comments from you about the blogroll. Because you have my email address and can take it up with me in email.

Oh, for shame… after the woodshedding you gave William about what NiT “should” be? That’s a grave disappointment, but s’ok — your blog, your rules.
.

Katherine Coble on 2 August, 2007 at 9:19 pm #

after the woodshedding you gave William about what NiT “should” be?

Which time? And what does that have to do with your constant comments about the blogroll not being to your liking?

Jeffraham Prestonian on 2 August, 2007 at 9:30 pm #

Which time? And what does that have to do with your constant comments about the blogroll not being to your liking?

I like the blogroll, just fine. I just like holding you to the same standard to which you hold others (say, William, for example).

Unfortunately, I have company now, and we’re going to drink beer — whoo-hoo! My Google-fu was weak just now, but it will probably be better tomorrow night, once I get this fugitive thang squared away.

I promise not to weasel out of a reply, though. Tomorrow, then?

Glen Dean on 2 August, 2007 at 10:52 pm #

Wow, just got home. You guys are a trip. Lets all hold hands and sing Kumbaya.

alison on 3 August, 2007 at 12:34 am #

the biggest thing i hate about it all is how being an “environmentalist” became such a political issue. we all could stand to consume a little less, myself included, and i don’t see how that is political. but i guess we always need something to choose sides on and not cross the line, no matter what the subject.

seeing the air in nashville over the past few days, that effects us all, not just one side of a party line. time to stop with all of that.

Ron on 3 August, 2007 at 8:05 am #

I’m just glad someone explained WATB (or so I assume, as my first thought was Winos Against The British).

Katherine Coble on 3 August, 2007 at 8:11 am #

Sometimes JP just forgets he’s not at Atrios over here.

# 9 on 3 August, 2007 at 12:56 pm #

We need to talk. This viral infection of Atrios and Markos Moulitsas, the KOS virus, is not a good thing. We have had this happen in Knoxville. Trust me, you will not like it. Allison is over at NiT trying to keep it from becoming a KOS Zombie zone, and what happens? R. Neal of Progressiveville, aka KnoxViews, writes some mean things about Allison and praises, you will not believe it, William. Why does he praise William? Because William is infected with the KOS virus. This is how it worked in Knoxville. To have local blogging you have to accept the KOS virus. Don’t do it here. NiT is history. Don’t let this place be overrun by KOS Zombies. I want to say that I appreciate Kat taking a stand.

Mack on 3 August, 2007 at 1:21 pm #

And where does Glen Dean think he is? Shrill is shrill, regardless of your or my political tendencies. I don’t see you reigning him in.

Really? Whiny Ass Titty Baby draws your ire? Beyond bland.

Katherine Coble on 3 August, 2007 at 2:24 pm #

I don’t see you reigning him in.

He isn’t

a) calling names without adding further discussion to the topic–I don’t even know if he’s calling names

b) persistently bringing up off-topic things into threads to derail them for his own purposes.

alison on 3 August, 2007 at 3:03 pm #

someone wrote something mean about me over at NiT? how is that even possible? all i’m blogging about is ponies and rainbows.

# 9 on 3 August, 2007 at 3:08 pm #

someone wrote something mean about me over at NiT? how is that even possible? all i’m blogging about is ponies and rainbows.

Apparently not KOSy enough.

http://www.knoxviews.com/node/5256

In Knoxville KnoxViews rules for local issues. Your mileage may vary on national issues.

alison on 3 August, 2007 at 4:12 pm #

that might’ve been the best post i’ve read all day. what does that guy care what happens in nashville? does he want me to spew my extremely left-ist opinions? would he feel better if he knew i voted for david briley? or would he feel better if i spent all day on NiT preaching to everyone how they should vote for david briley, and were a fucking idiot if they didn’t?

Katherine Coble on 3 August, 2007 at 4:38 pm #

R. Neal only truly cares about Nashville if you post a picture of his without copyright permission.

That REALLY burns his butter.

alison on 3 August, 2007 at 4:42 pm #

duly noted. i’m on it.

Glen Dean on 3 August, 2007 at 5:47 pm #

Jeffraham Prestonian on 3 August, 2007 at 7:56 pm #

I’ll probably just post it at my very popular blog, and let KatCo dig in however she likes.

Jeffraham Prestonian on 3 August, 2007 at 8:00 pm #

I find it hard to imagine, though, that KatCo hasn’t figured that I like arguing for arguing’s sake. Well, that, and holding hall monitors to the same standard to which they hold everyone else, of course.

JP, still sad this place won’t be the second Krazy KOS in Nashville? You are now accusing MCB of being the Nashville branch of LGF?

You are a trip.

JP writes on a blog few know of, “Do I think MCB is turning into Little Music City Footballs? Not yet, but when one has to go this far afield of Music City to keep the wingnut agenda front and center (which is what it looks like, to this dirty hippie), one does have to wonder.”

I don’t think you are a dirty hippie. You seen both clean and articulate.

badbadivy on 5 August, 2007 at 12:40 pm #

No; I’m disappointed that the promised transparency hasn’t explained two non-local blogs being on the aggregator.
.
Because I am REALLY fucking sick of hearing about that, let me explain it to you, Jeffraham. And you’d better shut up after this, or I will have to punch you in the nose, capisce?
.
There are more than 2 non-local blogs in the aggregator, because my cousin’s blog is one of them. I believe the 2 that you keep being a WATB about were originally on there by accident. The authors of those blogs have since emailed and thanked us for being on the aggregator, which is nice of them, so they stay.
.
But it doesn’t matter, because when the site started, I had already decided that a few non-local blogs (like my cousin’s) would be on the aggregator. Why? Because I like the people who are on the aggregator, and while this site is by and for the Nashville people, I’m still the HBIC and I said so.
.
There, how’s that for transparency? :-P

Jeffraham Prestonian on 5 August, 2007 at 12:45 pm #

I like the people who are on the aggregator, and while this site is by and for the Nashville people, I’m still the HBIC and I said so.

Far better than any explanation I got from KatCo!
.

badbadivy on 5 August, 2007 at 12:52 pm #

So, are you done talking about the damn aggregator, Jeffraham? (Please say yes, this is a mellow Sunday at Chez Ivy and I’d hate to have to drive out to West Nashville to punch you in the nose.)

Jeffraham Prestonian on 5 August, 2007 at 1:01 pm #

Only partially, which is to say, “no.”

It could be worse, though… one of these winger-bloggers (whether local or not) could take up my cause for not receiving amnesty for not being minority or female enough.
.

Katherine Coble on 5 August, 2007 at 2:44 pm #

I’m not giving you any explanations because Im sick and tired of your shit. Ivy gave you the explanation.

Katherine Coble on 5 August, 2007 at 3:44 pm #

FYI, I gave Ivy the answer to give to you. I just didnt give it to you myself.

So whatever. This is the last comment I’m going to engage you in your silly “argument for argument’s sake” From now on, anything I have to say to you I’ll say thru Ivy. I’m done with you. How’s that for transparency?

Plonk.

Jeffraham Prestonian on 5 August, 2007 at 4:03 pm #
