There’s apparently a reason that some things are confidential and not open to the media’s reporting.

Vivalalesley talks about how the AP did something legal but perhaps not ethical

…[T]he AP took advantage of the doofuses at the FTC who don’t know how to properly file documents with confidential information.

One could argue that it was investigative journalism (a real stretch to call it that since the information was revealed with a few keystrokes), but it sounds rather irresponsible to me. The information was obviously (”apparently,” according to the AP) not intended for public knowledge and I’m curious to see if they will be held liable for releasing the information.

Certainly, I’m for a free press and all, but this is reminiscent of accidentally gaining access to a test key before a big final exam. Do you look? Do you share it with all your classmates?

She’s got a lot more detailed information about the case in question, including how the release of this information will quite possibly harm both business and consumer interests.
