Clint Brewer and Bill Harless report in the City Paper today that the Nashville Sounds have begun informal discussions with the city of Franklin about a possible relocation to a new stadium there.

That’s only fair.  I pay higher taxes in Nashville so that half of the population of Williamson County can move north for three hours on Sundays.  Now maybe they can share the bill for the baseball games I attend.

I wish they’d just do whatever they need to do to the current site and get it over with. If it’s so important that baseball be *Downtown!* instead of, oh, a mile or so away, what’s up with moving to Franklin?

Rachel, to get the current site up to league standards would cost about the same as a brand new stadium.
-
The “downtown” part is baseball romanticism more than anything: recreating the vibe of Fenway, Wrigley and other downtown stadiums. Plus Memphis did it, and there’s no better motivator than sibling rivalry.
-
Once the downtown deal fell through, this was highly predictable. And, I see no harm, since half the city spends weekends at Cool Springs, anyway.

Given the City Paper’s record for accuracy (’Briley going to endorse Clement’), I’m guessing the Sounds will probably end up in Sumner County..

The best place for the Sounds to play is the current Steiner-Liff car-recycling junky yard next to Titan’s stadium. Parking already there..good access, plus you can walk across the bridge from downtown to the games. What’s not to like?

Oh, great idea, John. More days when I can’t get into or out of my neighborhood.

Slarti, under no sets of estimations would it cost as much to bring Greer Stadium up to standard as it would to build a new stadium. I would cost a lot, but any version of a new stadium I’ve seen would cost more. For that reason, and because I happen to love Greer Stadium with a love that’s pure and true, I hope they do decide to upgrade the place and forget about anything new.

Slartibartfast on 15 August, 2007 at 10:04 am #

nm, that makes sense. The “upgrade cost woes” I heard came from the majority owner of the Sounds, and owners tend to cry poverty when they want a new stadium.

It still would have been neat at the thermal site, though. The concept drawings gave me goosebumps.

Eh, the one we have now gives me goosebumps. I really don’t have words to express how connected to something I love that place makes me feel. I understand your view, I do, but I’m part of the teensy teensy group hoping for no move.

Minor league ball should be played in a dump. It’s in the bible. And Greer fits the bill perfectly.

Building new stadiums that try to look old is just a further starbuckification of the world. I wouldn’t drive to Cool Springs to piss on the field if it was on fire.
