Well, this should get the debate stirred up among those of us who love television.

UGO has picked the top 50 TV shows of all-time. Here are the top 10:

10. Price is Right
9. South Park
8. The Simpsons
7. Freaks and Geeks
6. The Muppet Show
5. Arrested Development
4. The Sopranos
3. Battlestar Galactica (current)
2. The Wire
1. Buffy the Vampire Slayer

I know at least one person will who be eccstatic that The Wire made it so high. The list is interesting, but I’m not quite sure why The Muppet Show ranks show high, while Seinfeld is 41, below the tripe that is Saved by the Bell and M.A.S.H. isn’t even on the list!

On a personal note, the list include Doctor Who in the top 30 but loses points on my personal scale for not having classic Star Trek on there.

(Ed. Note:  The Wire should have been #1.  You Whedon Freaks will know the truth one day.)

Kids.

What. The. Hell. Saved By The Bell is #29 and Degrassi: The Next Generation isn’t even on there. Seriously, what the fuck.

Andy Axel on 20 August, 2007 at 5:37 pm #

No Monty Python’s Flying Circus? Yow.

Joe P. on 20 August, 2007 at 5:51 pm #

um. that list is enough to give Buffy and Whedon fans a baaaad name. Adventures of Pete and Pete? Transformers? Jackass?

The “underground” in “UGO” must be a reference to the fact the list’s creators are still living in mommy’s basement. yeesh.

“Freak and Geeks”? Only the cast memebrs and their families watched that.

No “All in the Family”?

Uh, you’d be wrong there.

In fact, we’re all talking about F&G over at Sepinwall’s place this summer.

The Shield isn’t in the top10?

The Perfesser on 20 August, 2007 at 6:48 pm #

Where is “Cheers”? Where is “The West Wing” ? Where is Uncle Milty!?!?!

I admit though I also watched Freaks & Geeks… does seeing it on DVD count?

melusina on 20 August, 2007 at 7:30 pm #

I would have preferred to see Twin Peaks a bit higher, I know the second season isn’t so great but the first season is so spectacular. No Northern Exposure on the list?

And as much as I love, love, LOVE The Wire, Homicide was a slightly better show. The writing was absolutely superb
and it seems a few ideas for The Wire were taken from Homicide. To recognize The Wire on the list but not Homicide is a disgrace!

And yea, what about The West Wing???

John Hutcheson on 20 August, 2007 at 7:39 pm #

Any top 10 list that doesn’t include Homicide and Dick Van Dyke is bogus. The Wire is definitely the best show, and yeah, Frank, lots of us watched and loved, Freaks and Geeks. Great writing..great cast.

The Muppets??? The Price is Right??? puhleeeze

Since the same guys wrote both shows, I don’t know if that counts.

Jeffraham Prestonian on 20 August, 2007 at 8:11 pm #

I can agree with only two of the top 10, but I haven’t seen quite a number of those shows. I’m not a huge TV fan, but how could The Simpsons and The Sopranos NOT be on that list, eh?
.

They used the definition of “of all time” that means “of the past 20 years,” huh?

And The Wire is better than Homicide. It gives a wider canvas, shows how the city works, and has just as good acting as Homicide — better, even.

No All In The Family or other Norman Lear shows???

Colbert is listed, but not Jon Stewart?

No 6ft Under?

No Mary Tyler Moore?

No Ed Sullivan?!@!!?!?!?!

No Johnny Carson????

Ugh!

Weak.

Nothing pre-MTV with the minor exception of a few shows whose life in syndication has kept them in the public eye.

Miami Vice got on the list but the Rockford Files didn’t?

Katherine Coble on 20 August, 2007 at 11:21 pm #

What is this “rockford files” you speak of?

Newscoma on 21 August, 2007 at 12:07 am #

I’m going with weak although Buffy is of the groovy.

BigOMichael on 21 August, 2007 at 8:08 am #

Simpsons and Sopranos made the list…they’re in the top 10 I believe.

But hey….if the writers of this wanted to create buzz and conversation, they got what they wanted….

Oh and editor person….your bias toward the Wire holds no water here….

And Jericho still sucks.

Kat, you jest about The Rockford Files, surely?

Jim Voorhies on 21 August, 2007 at 10:15 am #

What is this “rockford files” you speak of? and just in case you aren’t kidding, it’s on the Sleuth channel as reruns.

melusina on 21 August, 2007 at 11:39 am #

Well, my point about The Wire and Homicide being similar was that they should both be on the list. I know the same guy does both, I wish he hadn’t recycled some of the same things for The Wire. And yes, it has a broader scope of Baltimore crime, but I think the writing in many cases in Homicide had more depth. And I can only say this after watching all five seasons of The Wire followed by all seven seasons of Homicide back to back. If I had watched Homicide way back when, I might not have compared them so much.

Dick Van Dyke Show I didn’t even think about. That is a classic.

I can’t really comment on Buffy, because I haven’t really watched it much, but I think even objectively The Wire has to be the better show. =p

I’m not sure I’d be ready to put the current BSG so high on the list until I see where they are going with the last season. Right now, I still think I liked Next Generation better overall as a Sci Fi show. And I like Firefly, but not anywhere near as much as either TNG or BSG.

1. Blackadder
2. Seinfeld
3. Six Feet Under
4. Rome
5. The Simpsons
6. MASH
7. The Office (American version)
8. Coupling (UK version)
9. Cheers
10. Mr. Bean
-
The West Wing would easily have cracked my top ten had they ceased production after Sorkin left.
