Bill Hobbs sees at least one silver lining behind the cloud of our current immigration problems.

And therein lies the seed of my idea: an independent organization that accredits businesses as being “illegal-free,” by verifying the immigration status of their non-citizen employees - granting businesses that don’t employ illegals a Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval-like designation that they are, indeed, illegal free.

Then, customers could chose to do business with stores and businesses that are certified “illegal-free,” rather than businesses that continue to flout American law and hire illegals. If enough customers refuse to patronize businesses that aren’t certified illegal-free, businesses would stop hiring illegals and get certified. Fewer job opportunities for illegals would mean fewer coming across the border.

It sounds like a reasonably prudent idea to me. However I just really wish everyone would stop using the adjective “illegal” as a noun.

I’m surprised that more businesses haven’t already started advertising the fact that all their employees are legal residents. I’d certainly take it into account when deciding where to spend my money if the information was readily available.

The only problem with that, Jay, is most places take reasonable precautions to ensure that their employees are here legally, and sometimes get screwed over because of forged documents, etc.

This would all be made a heck of a lot easier if there was some kinda place you could plug a tax number in and know immediately if it was cool.

I expect it does. I don’t think there’s any easy answer to the issue.

And the “legal” status of a couple of low income employees is important? How about advertizing that you do not sell chinese goods manufactured in dangerous conditions? Or, if you prefer, let’s advertize that our company covers every employee with a jam up medical plan, so that the state bears no cost for fixing these people when they break. There’s a million things we could and possibly should look for when deciding whom to do business with, the documentation of a few of their employees ranks dead last with me.
