The Editor-in-Chief lets us know that Kroger is selling *real* Coca-Cola, the kind made from real sugar, not high fructose corn syrup, and coveted by folks of all religions and none at Passover, when a special run of the brew is available to select locations. According to the EIC, the special cola found in Kroger is imported from Mexico, which also uses sugar instead of HFCS.

You’ll have to look closely for this - I found it in single glass bottles on a low shelf in the “International” aisle of my Kroger. Check the ingredient label to verify. If you see high fructose corn syrup, keep looking.

Interesting … a few years ago, the Coca-Cola Company was threatening legal action against some of the little Latino groceries that were doing this (because it violated the agreement giving each bottler control of its own territory). If Kroger is doing it, I assume that some sort of agreement must have been reached, perhaps giving the local bottler a share of the profits.

There’s a distributor in Texas who still makes real sugar Dr. Pepper available for purchase online.

Ron, I must have that URL.

I’m intrigued. Is the taste superior?

Many say the cane sugar does taste better than the corn sweetener, although the beverage company people say that’s not borne out by blind testing. There are even conspiracy theorists who claim the whole New Coke debacle was engineered to distract attention from Coke’s switchover ( old classic Coke was made with cane sugar, but when it was re-introduced after the failure of New Coke, it was made with the corn sweetener ). Jones Soda Company, which has been around for a while but only recently been picked up by some of the larger supermarket chains, uses cane sugar ( “Corn is for cars. Cane is for soda,” boasts the package).

For a while, RC made “Royal Crown Draft Cola,” which came in a longneck beer bottle and was made with cane sugar, but it wasn’t well distributed. The main place I remember seeing it was at the RC / Moon Pie festival in Bell Buckle.

Chez Bez, I grew up in San Antonio you usually could order either American or Mexican Coca-Cola at restaurants… It was always awesome if my parents let me have the Mexican version as it is much tastier IMHO.

Drink away, Rachel. Your dentist will thank me.

The corn sweetener is much cheaper than real sugar, hence the move.

Ron, very cool. I’m actually thinking of it as a silly gift, so someone else’s dentist will have to thank you. ;)

Wow John, you sure do know your soda pop! I’ve got to get to a Kroger and get this stuff. I bet it’s great

Coca-Cola needs to get a clue. They use cane sugar in their Cokes everywhere else in the world *except* the US (last I had some, even Canada’s said “sucrose”), so the “it costs less” argument is bogus - why wouldn’t they use plastic and HFCS everywhere else where the countries are poorer than the US, if it saved money? No, instead, you can get sugared Coke in a glass bottle, like God intended! Thailand Coke and Spanish Coke are insanely good (in a glass bottle that is).

And Royal Crown Draft Cola is still made & sold in … New Zealand! I even found an on-line grocery store that sells it. Too bad they don’t ship internationally ;) I would give my left nutsack to get some of that stuff again! Best. Cola. Evar.

High Fructose Corn Syrup, just say no! Plastic bottles and aluminum cans, just say no! Cola tastes best in a glass bottle with pure cane sugar, dagnabit.
