Sharon Cobb wonders if David Beckham is too Old Spice.
While there’s little question David Beckham is (perhaps) the best soccer player in the world, he is also getting a little long in the tooth, and it appears his best days are yester.
…
I think he’s good for the sport, insomuch as he draws a lot of attention to the game, but I think he’s being paid a ridiculous amount of money to be what is turning out to be little more than a cheerleader.
With that first sentence, credibility vanished.
However . . .
Becks’ best days are of course gone at his age, as were Pele’s when he signed on to the NASL back in the 70’s. Still, considering that the level of play in MLS is about on par with that of 1st Div in the Premiership, Beckham could likely score a few goals on one leg. He’s a midfielder, and he needs someone who can actually recieve one of his crosses. Perhaps it would have been wiser of the MLS and the Galaxy to spend a portion of his salary on an ageing, but equally talented and popular striker to pair him with — could they find one so enamoured of the US as Beckham (and Posh) is to want to come here.
Best soccer player in the world???? You couldn’t have watched much World Cup 2006 or Euro 2004 either. He didn’t perform well at either.
Don’t get me wrong, I like watching the guy when he’s only halfway on form.
I think Beckham sees his role partly as being an evangelist for his sport in America - and yes, that means he’s an overpaid cheerleader.
I’m just pissed I’m not the prettiest girl on the team any longer!
Now the rest of you who glossed right over this, and the two of you who actually know the truth - he’s not even a cheerleader, he’s here for the image rights sales and to get his wife back in some form of performing career, you both carry on. I’ll get over it even if I can’t get on the end of Beckham’s perfect crosses. I’m just not that smart to see them coming is the problem.
