As seen on I-65, right here in Music City USA…

No matter which side of the argument you stand, this is absolutely abhorrent.

Just damn.

Andy Axel on 6 September, 2007 at 1:47 pm #

Where’s a pissing Calvin when you need one?

Finn on 6 September, 2007 at 1:49 pm #

Yikes.

Mack on 6 September, 2007 at 2:00 pm #

The guy that sent me this pic just called to tell me the truck had Robertson County tags. We’re so proud!

Southern Beale on 6 September, 2007 at 2:00 pm #

Onward, Christian Nationalists … straight into the abyss.

Finn on 6 September, 2007 at 2:03 pm #

Oh geez, I live in Robt Co. We’re not all idiots I promise.

Grace on 6 September, 2007 at 2:20 pm #

Seriously???

Ned Williams on 6 September, 2007 at 2:33 pm #

Wow–that takes a lot of somethin’ somethin’ to produce and then display.

sistasmiff on 6 September, 2007 at 2:47 pm #

That’s your (collective your) constitutional rights in action. I hope that guy can drive fast. Or duck fast. Sheesh.

Katherine Coble on 6 September, 2007 at 3:09 pm #

That’s your (collective your) constitutional rights in action

Yes, it is.

As much as I disagree with the content, I’m glad whoever it is has the right to display that content.

Yes, this pisses me off.

But so do the stickers I’ve seen around town with “Calvin” peeing on “La Migra”.

Both sides of nice ways of offending.

Sarcastro on 6 September, 2007 at 3:10 pm #

I can’t believe that someone would have a sticker like that.

Everybody knows there’s no such thing as God.

J.D. on 6 September, 2007 at 3:11 pm #

I have to agree with you Snaps. That’s just plain tacky no matter what side of the fence you’re on

J.D. on 6 September, 2007 at 3:13 pm #

“I can’t believe that someone would have a sticker like that.

Everybody knows there’s no such thing as God.
————————————–

You’re going to get the chance to met him one day.

Katherine Coble on 6 September, 2007 at 3:14 pm #

Everybody knows there’s no such thing as God.

Your wife is gonna sic me on your ass again.

GingerSnaps on 6 September, 2007 at 3:15 pm #

I don’t like Calvin peeing on #3 or #8, either. Them’s fightin’ words rigtchair!

Katherine Coble on 6 September, 2007 at 3:16 pm #

Who’s #8?

::hides from NASCAR devotees::

GingerSnaps on 6 September, 2007 at 3:18 pm #

*gasp!*

#8 is the Son of God Earnhardt, Dale, Jr.!

Ron on 6 September, 2007 at 3:19 pm #

#8 is Junior!

Jim Voorhies on 6 September, 2007 at 3:19 pm #

Oh geez, I live in Robt Co. We’re not all idiots I promise.

Ditto on where I live and the sentiment. I am surprised he actually knew how to spell damn.

Frank on 6 September, 2007 at 3:19 pm #

He probably trains dogs to fight.

Ron on 6 September, 2007 at 3:21 pm #

No black person would drive a pickup truck, Frank.

Katherine Coble on 6 September, 2007 at 3:21 pm #

#8 is the Son of God Earnhardt, Dale, Jr.!

I was gonna say…he can’t be the son of God, because then according to Sarcastro he could never race. Because he wouldn’t exist.

GingerSnaps on 6 September, 2007 at 3:23 pm #

Good point, Kat.

Liz on 6 September, 2007 at 3:26 pm #

I hope someone keys his truck…

Ron on 6 September, 2007 at 3:26 pm #

I don’t know of Dale Earnhardt Jr. exists, but I know there’s something out there driving that #8. I guess you could say I’m Budnostic.

GingerSnaps on 6 September, 2007 at 3:27 pm #

But seriously, folks…
This guy believes in GOD (using his capitalization), and therefore, he is praying for GOD to damn (destroy) an entire group of people: illegal aliens.

He is no better than the jihadists who pray to their god for the death and destruction of our people in the USA.

He is just as evil.

I’ll be he hasn’t thought of that.

Sarcastro on 6 September, 2007 at 3:33 pm #

He is no better than the jihadists who pray to their god for the death and destruction of our people in the USA.

Or the Israelites of the Old Testament.

Ned Williams on 6 September, 2007 at 3:34 pm #

Liz,
I hope you’re being sarcastic, but that is something I fear from the moral-relativist types when displaying something of which they disapprove, frankly.

Ginger,
I think it is pretty safe to assume that the person displaying that sign doesn’t pray. He may show up in church or tell people he’s religious, but I doubt he prays.

GingerSnaps on 6 September, 2007 at 3:34 pm #

Good point, Sar.

GingerSnaps on 6 September, 2007 at 3:36 pm #

Ned,
I’m sure that the dude probably prays just as much as the dudes who are out to destroy us via holy war do.

Just because one prays doesn’t mean one is righteous.

Ned Williams on 6 September, 2007 at 3:44 pm #

No doubt repeating or saying certain words doesn’t mean someone is righteous, but I still doubt he prays.

Katherine Coble on 6 September, 2007 at 3:47 pm #

He is just as evil.

I still doubt he prays

So did Jesus die for him any less?

GingerSnaps on 6 September, 2007 at 3:53 pm #

So did Jesus die for him any less?

No…did anybody say He didn’t?

Jesus died for all…good and evil. That isn’t the point here.

The point is that this guy, in the name of “GOD” is spreading hate and “praying” for his god to damn people.

That is hate.

Sarcastro on 6 September, 2007 at 3:56 pm #

Let us all thank Him for the ethically dubious notion of vicarious redemption by human sacrifice.

Katherine Coble on 6 September, 2007 at 4:09 pm #

Let us all thank Him for the ethically dubious notion of vicarious redemption by human sacrifice.

But since He was also God, wouldn’t it be God-sacrifice…a notion not unheard of in many major religions?

No…did anybody say He didn’t?

Jesus died for all…good and evil. That isn’t the point here.

Well, it kind of is…

The point is that this guy, in the name of “GOD” is spreading hate and “praying” for his god to damn people.

So I think that pointing out that he’s no worse than anyone else for whom the price was paid it serves to dilute his hatred just a little bit. I mean, sure, he’s being kind of ridiculous–but no more so in the eyes of that GOD he mentions twice than any of the rest of us.

nm on 6 September, 2007 at 4:13 pm #

Kat, do you think all sins are equal to divine eyes? I’m just curious, not trying to pick a fight or anything.

Sarcastro on 6 September, 2007 at 4:14 pm #

Damn that’s convenient. Killing yourself, but not really, and proclaiming you did it as a favor to everyone else.

Genius!

Katherine Coble on 6 September, 2007 at 4:27 pm #

Kat, do you think all sins are equal to divine eyes? I’m just curious, not trying to pick a fight or anything.

I do.

They aren’t necessarily equal (in my belief) in terms of earthly consequences, but in terms of divine judgement, yes.

nm on 6 September, 2007 at 4:29 pm #

Hmmmm.

Jay on 6 September, 2007 at 4:32 pm #

They say every sin is deadly, but I believe they may be wrong, I’m guilty of all 7 and I don’t feel too bad at all.

This has been your Drive-by Trucker moment of the day.

I’ll bet he hasn’t thought.

You could have ended that sentence right there and still had a safe bet.

GingerSnaps on 6 September, 2007 at 4:35 pm #

They aren’t necessarily equal (in my belief) in terms of earthly consequences, but in terms of divine judgement, yes.

…and yet, that doesn’t, in any way, excuse or minimalize a person’s actions when they are causing harm to others.

Katherine Coble on 6 September, 2007 at 4:38 pm #

and yet, that doesn’t, in any way, excuse or minimalize a person’s actions when they are causing harm to others.

I never said it did. I only say that it minimises my reactions to it.

GingerSnaps on 6 September, 2007 at 4:41 pm #

But why should it, Kat? There are all kinds of issues that you get fired up about and your reactions are certainly not “minimal.” So why would the sight of a person displaying a hate message on the back of his truck, right here in our hometown, not give you the same reaction as if the person had an anti-feminist or anti-libertarian message?

Hate should cause outrage no matter what side of an issue one is on.

Katherine Coble on 6 September, 2007 at 4:51 pm #

So why would the sight of a person displaying a hate message on the back of his truck, right here in our hometown, not give you the same reaction as if the person had an anti-feminist or anti-libertarian message?

I never said it didn’t. I believe, if you scroll up, you’ll see that I said it pisses me off.

But it doesn’t piss me off more than if it were anti-woman, anti-fat or anti-libertarian.

That’s my point. It seems like some folks are saying THIS is so bad…so much worse than anything else.

I’m kinda like, well, it’s bad–but I expect no more from society.

GingerSnaps on 6 September, 2007 at 6:15 pm #

It seems like some folks are saying THIS is so bad…so much worse than anything else.

Really? Can you state and example?

If anything, it appears that some are trying to cloud the issue at hand by turning it into a theological discussion.

Katherine Coble on 6 September, 2007 at 6:21 pm #

it appears that some are trying to cloud the issue at hand by turning it into a theological discussion.

a) that random dude brought GOD into it in the first place. How is that not theological?

b) whenever someone starts using largely theological terms like “evil”, it brings that out in me.

GingerSnaps on 6 September, 2007 at 6:29 pm #

a) Do you believe hate is evil?

b) Do you believe that what this man put on the back of his truck is hateful?

c) To think it necessary to point out that the truck-owner’s sinfulness is no worse than anyone else’s was pointless and clouded the true issue of this post.

That issue being that it does not matter which side of the immigration issue one is on, spreading hatred with these kinds of displays is wrong.

Period.

Katherine Coble on 6 September, 2007 at 6:54 pm #

a) a) Do you believe hate is evil?

Not always. (Proverbs 8:13)

b) Do you believe that what this man put on the back of his truck is hateful?

I have seen a picture of a truck with inflammatory words on it. I don’t know who put them there or why. Without all those facts, I refuse to make any kind of evaluation of the state of mind of the person who put that on the back of a truck.

The words themselves are ignorant and deserving of scorn.

c) To think it necessary to point out that the truck-owner’s sinfulness is no worse than anyone else’s was pointless and clouded the true issue of this post.

I guess that when you say “Thoughts?” in a post, I infer that you are soliciting a wide range of opinions, not necessarily a chorus of unanimous tongue-clucking.

As I stated in my initial comment, this display is ignorant and makes me personally angry. However I have seen other displays from the “other side” that are equally ignorant and equally angry making.

Regardless.

I don’t feel like sitting in judgment on a person when I don’t even have all the facts.

I’ve said what I feel about the words I’ve seen. But I don’t know what the intent was behind them.

And about such things I remain ever cynical and mildly skeptical. And I refuse to be swayed by emotion when it comes to this particular debate, as I believe I’ve said time and again.

Carrie on 6 September, 2007 at 7:49 pm #

Jumping in here for the first time ever…So hello and here goes…If I got a chance to talk to Mr. Damn Truck, I’d ask him who he thinks guts his roaster chickens, built the latest strip mall in his ‘hood and is cooking the cheap, greasy burger he picks up at the drive-thru.

As one of “those people” (though the legal kind) I can say those displays are hurtful and unproductive.

I also would ask him if he’s ever even sat down with a Latino, had a friend who immigrated to this country in the last generation. How could you so strongly hate people you don’t really even know? People who really have not infringed on you, but have — at least in this community — been the backbone of every growing industry for the last decade (hotels, McMansions, restaurants, downtown construction…)

Please don’t read my statement as saying I support anything illegal. I don’t. What I support is compassion, understanding and fair laws.

GingerSnaps on 6 September, 2007 at 7:55 pm #

Carrie, I just visited your blog…I am also from Miami! So glad you have jumped in here at Music City Bloggers…welcome!!!

Jay on 6 September, 2007 at 8:41 pm #

Personally, I find the religious hypocrisy more surprising/shocking/shameful/sad than the supposed “hate” behind the message.
Most Christians I know consider taking God’s name in vain to be pretty high on the burn-in-hell-o’meter. At least that’s what they tell me whenever I do it.

Ned Williams on 6 September, 2007 at 8:51 pm #

nm,
I’d say it a little differently than Kat; the Bible says that any single sin is sufficient to condemn a person and make them dependent on God’s mercy to avoid judgment.

Ginger,
I guess I was primarily balking at your suggestion that putting this stupid sign on a car is “praying.” And, unlike Kat, I feel pretty comfortable concluding various things about any person who would display this slogan. Sure, s/he can/could be forgiven and there are worse things s/he could do, but . . .

Slartibartfast on 6 September, 2007 at 9:40 pm #

Ned,technically, in the theistic framework, asking God to intervene on earth or in heaven is indeed a prayer. “God Bless (x)” is a prayer. “God damn (x)” is also a prayer. But as I recall, Jonah made a similar prayer for God to damn the Ninevites, but God had His own ideas. He was none too happy with Jonah.
-
Considering my own faults, I am quite fearful to ask God to bring judgement on the wicked.
-
Evil? Let’s talk about Peyton Manning. ;)

Ned Williams on 6 September, 2007 at 9:51 pm #

I hate to say it, but I’m glad Peyton’s pulling away because I was hoping to get to bed early tonight.

Re. “praying,” I understand your point, but I was asserting that just because a sentence (or sign) includes the word God doesn’t mean that the person is really “praying” or seeking an answer or communicating with the Divine . . . I think a person that would display this type of message is perfectly demonstrating how to violate the commandment about using God’s name in vain.

nm on 7 September, 2007 at 7:47 am #

But as I recall, Jonah made a similar prayer for God to damn the Ninevites, but God had His own ideas. He was none too happy with Jonah.

Nah, Jonah got instructions to tell the Ninevites to repent or they would be destroyed. That’s a very different thing. Now, once they did repent and thus weren’t destroyed he got peeved. (He was remarkably concerned about how he looked to others, for a prophet — all that running away and all.) But he never prayed for them to be destroyed.

Marc on 7 September, 2007 at 9:07 am #

This kind of reminds me of the latest Spiderman movie, when Eddie Brock goes to the church and prayers for Spidermans death. And yes, it’s just as stupid.

Casey Fleser on 7 September, 2007 at 10:31 am #

This kind of reminds me of…

Mad me think of a tweet that someone made yesterday:

I like the way that mail to Steve (Jobs) doesn’t bounce, and you’re unlikely to get a reply. It’s kind of like praying.

Katie on 7 September, 2007 at 9:05 pm #

Man I wish I had taken a picture of the lowrider that had “PANTYDROPPER” across the back. It was in Clarksville.
