Anna Calixto wanted an order of protection against her husband. She went to court, and Judge W. Dale Young asked her if she was here legally (EDIT: She is, indeed, here legally), then told her to go back to Nicaragua. Kleinheider had the story originally, then Sean Braisted picked it up and added more info:
While the ignorance of this goes without saying, it is all the more surprising, because Judge Dale Young, a Former member of the Blount County Republican Executive Committee, seemed to think victims of domestic violence should be treated with respect back when he was running for re-election in 2006.
Veddy interesting. What’s this woman supposed to do? Just put up with the abuse? Leave her American children here so she can go back to Nicaragua? Take them with her and ruin things like their good education, etc? Ridiculous, I tell ya, ridiculous.
Maybe she should have thought about all of these ramifications before she came here illegally? However, I am in now way endoresing or excusing her husband’s alleged abuse.
Maybe she should have thought about all of these ramifications before she came here illegally?
I believe she is here legally.
Sorry if what I wrote isn’t clear, JD, but she *is* here legally. I will edit my post to make that clearer.
Maybe she should have thought about all of these ramifications before she came here illegally?
This is what makes the story so outrageous. We’ve regressed so much as a society, that people of a certain ideological bent now think anyone of a different color is here illegally. Incredibly sad. This comment was made to her by the judge AFTER she offered to show her documentation.
Secondly, since when is being abused a ramification of illegal immigration?
I wonder how much of his reaction has to do with the complainant being specifically Nicaraguan?
I know there is little love lost in many circles here in Tennessee for Nicaragua at the moment because of Eric Volz.
I’ve been trying to see if this judge has any connection to FoEV.
I don’t give a damn if she was authorized to be here or not, Young’s job was not to determine the immigration status of the plaintiff, rather, to decide whether or not a court order or protection was necessary for the safety of this woman and her children. If he wanted to be a dick about it, he could call the ICE and have them check it out, but his duty should be to uphold the public’s safety, not make decisions based on his feelings about our FEDERAL immigration policies.
Amen, Sean.
I agree with Sean 100%. This is not about the woman’s immigration status, this is about the fact that a woman was abused and needed an order of protection against her husband.
Many women in that culture put up with the abuse instead of going to the authorities, so for her to go to the authorities, it must have been very hard. And then she gets that treatment.
The fact that she’s indeed here legally makes it just that much more outrageous.
(*taking a cue from our conservative brethren*)
When are the immigration restrictionists who get all fired up when people accuse them of being racist going to police their own? Shouldn’t illegal immigration haters who abhor being called xenophobes publicly denounce this man? I haven’t heard shit all from any of them about this.
Kat,
General resentment to Eric’s imprisonment might be part of it (that would be a guess on my part as well)… but I find the judge’s comment odd, considering that the current Nicaraguan President (Ortega) was accused of sexually abusing his stepdaughter (over a 9 year period) AND the international scale of the uproar that followed his claim to immunity as a member of Nicaragua’s parliament. You think the judge made that connection or even an old Iran-Contra connection??

My comment was based on the unedited post by BBI. The original post did infer that she was here illegally. Why else would the judge send her back? Now that I actually clicked on the article and read its entirety I too am outraged. Make a mark libs, this will be one of the few times I agree with yall. If we are getting the whole story this judge was definitely out of line. I don’t believe illegal immigrants are entititled to all of the privileges and rights (i.e right to vote) we have as Americans but everyone should be protected from physical abuse and violence.
Wait until you see what the judge did to another woman recently: http://www.thedailytimes.com/article/20071010/NEWS/71009023
