The examination of this question is being ably handled by Laura Fuller Julie Fletcher at the Family Resource Blog.

In today’s society, it is generally ok for a woman to say she loves children. For a mother to be present at school functions or even in classes, if a man states he loves children the first thought that often comes to mind is ‘Oh my gosh, he must be a pedophile’ or ‘That is so weird’. So generally, all men who love children is a pedophile in many minds. I’ve seen enough of this type of talk in forums, chats, and in person to know this is a major frame of mind.

This is very scary to mothers out there who encourage their children’s fathers to be involved in their children’s lives. A father who spends the same amount of time, if not more, with their children at school, in extra curricular activities, or allowing their children’s friends to visit suddenly is a weirdo. Why is this? There have been women who take advantage of young men or boys throughout time. But I have heard people when viewing such stories covered in the media think the women involved were punished too severely. It is like a rite of passage for a teen boy to be sexually involved with an older woman. Take a peek at any of the American Pie movie series if you don’t believe that one. Older woman + young man/boy= acceptable.

I admit that ever since that Ted Danson TV Movie about incest, the public attitude toward fathers’ involvement in their children’s lives seems to have changed dramatically. It kind of makes me sad.

Yeah there’s a weird and unfair double-standard.

At TheBoyfriend™’s job, the female therapists can be paired with either boys or girls but the male therapists are only put with boys. Seems odd to me.

At church, the parents were never quite comfortable with me being a small-kid teacher, even with my wife being the co-teacher. I’e since moved back to the older kids. It’s really a shame, but in some ways I understand the apprehension.

Thanks for the link, I appreciate it:-). I noticed you put Laura Fuller, but I’m Julie Fletcher…today isn’t my day. One of my editors called me Dan and another addressed my email to Linda.

Yeeks.

I worry about this a lot. I see men who love their kids and get looked at weirdly all the time. I just hope one day we can all be ‘people’. Pfeh.

“I admit that ever since that Ted Danson TV Movie about incest, the public attitude toward fathers’ involvement in their children’s lives seems to have changed dramatically.”********************************** The fact that you can’t remember the name of the movie would belittle your assertion that the movie impacted society as a whole. Maybe just your perception of society would be more accurate.

“… if a man states he loves children the first thought that often comes to mind is ‘Oh my gosh, he must be a pedophile’ …”

My first thought is that Julie Fletcher is ignorant and culturally sheltered.

Have these people never heard of single fathers? Dads with custody?

Julie, since you’re blogging here today, would you please explain to us why that was your FIRST thought?

Julie, since you’re blogging here today, would you please explain to us why that was your FIRST thought?

Because that man was Michael Jackson

There’s Something About Amelia

(I did remember the movie’s name. I wasn’t sure if other readers would.)

How to explain where this thinking comes from? i’ve got four words for you:

Local News. Sweeps week.

How many times can they breathlessly report “A sex offender could be living in YOUR neighborhood!!!”

i have an early childhood degree, and in seeking out employment (which child care agencies are the most natural fit) men were generally not allowed to work with babies, policy about men not changing diapers. the diapers thing i could get over, whew! that whole perception though perpetuates those kinds of policies.

I think of that movie every time I see a promo for Damages.

You must admit that the girl who played Amelia is pretty hot.

I wonder about/suspect anyone, man or womman, that voluntarily spends time with other people’s kids.

Yeah, everyone knows Big Brothers/Big Sisters is just an international child-rape ring. That’s why when I was 13 I signed up for Big Sisters immediately.

@SouthernBeale-I’m not blogging here. I thanked the author for their link. You picked out one sentence to reply to, making it sound as if I am saying men are pedophiles. Did you read the entire post where I was supporting the fact that the type of thinking which supports that is WRONG?

@Ron- Jackson isn’t worth thinking about.

@Slartibartfast -Nope, it came from another post on another blog and what it caused me to consider.

@Jay- That is exactly the type of thinking everyone should have.

For some reason, someone seems to have the thought that I think that men are pedphiles.

Far from it. I was addressing the fact that many people get the idea that if a man cares for children, people make assumptions. I don’t understand what the problem is with me pointing out the flak men get.

I read a post on another blog and my thoughts went down that path. I don’t think every man in the world is a sex offender, nor should all men get a bad rap based on their sex alone, was the whole point of the original post.
