I have NEVER understood why a “family themed” resort built around a series of movies featuring animals (Mice, bears, dogs, cats, horses, more dogs, more mice, alien dogs…you get the picture) had such BEYOND LOUSY pet care services. Oh, they have kennels. First come, first serve. You have to leave your pet there in the morning and pick him up at night. You have to walk your pet.

For those of us whose pets are our family, Walt Disney World’s response to pet ownership has been somewhat akin to asking you to leave your baby in jail while you enjoy the park. For YEARS now, pet owners have been clamouring for better, more up-to-date pet services at the Resort. In fact, in nearly every “what would you like to see Disney do next?” poll, pet care tops everything–including “more rollercoasters” and “more bars”.

So you better believe I was overjoyed when I read this.

The Walt Disney Company is building a new resort at Walt Disney World for pets. Best Friends Pet Care Inc. has signed an agreement to build a luxury pet resort at the Walt Disney World Resort. The facility will offer a full range of pet hospitality including dog and cat boarding, day care, grooming and day camp. Pets will enjoy amenities such as televisions, raised beddings and activities such as nature walks and to bedtime stories.

I love my dog, but I’d still vote for “more bars”

I’m glad to hear that they are finally doing this! I’d love to take mine with, but I pay to have them well taken care of, while I’m away.

Let me say I am a dog owner and dog lover. However, I don’t think Disney should allow people to bring their dogs into the park. You increase the chance of dog bites, you have the dogs peeing in the flower beds and killing them, or even worse, dog poo that owners don’t clean up. In the meantime, what benefit is there? Your dog can’t ride the rides, they can’t enjoy the shows. All they can do is walk around and interact with people, which may be good or bad. And again, there’s the dog bite liability (whether the dog is big or small, they can still bite), plus, what about people with allergies?

I just don’t see the magic kingdom as a place to bring your pet.

Wow..when I’m donating fifty dollars to charity next week through my work, I’ll remember that this will probably pay for 1/2 day at Disney for a dog.
