Les Jones is more than a bit miffed about the recent news that marriage is better for the environment.

Do I really have to tithe to the Sierra Club? Is it 10 percent even if I recycle? Could we knock a couple points off if I vote for candidates who support light rail?

Head on over to his place for other questions and a bonus Chanukah Environmental Tidbit.

Two or more people working together is more efficient than an individual working alone? Stop the presses, I’m shocked.

It *is* funny though that merely mentioning benefit to the planet is enough to suddenly turn conservatives against the idea that families solve everything.

I don’t think that’s the point. The environmental scientists quoted in the article suggested that “People have been talking about how to protect the environment and combat climate change, but divorce is an overlooked factor that needs to be considered.”

As if people should suddenly reconsider divorce now that it might hurt the environment. Never mind the hard divorce does to the kids. Never mind the personal emotional and financial devastation. We must suffer through our bad marriages for the sake of the unthinking, unfeeling environment.

I heard about the suggestion of lighting one less candle during Chanakuh on the radio the other day. Now we have to alter religious traditions? How long before the town does away with Christmas decorations to combat global warming? These people are amazing.

>We must suffer through our bad marriages for the sake of the unthinking, unfeeling environment.

And my point is that conservatives often seem to think that people should suffer through bad marriages for any host of reasons, why not one more?

Les Jones on 6 December, 2007 at 9:24 pm #

I think it’s true that some religious types do think that, but that doesn’t make this latest reason any less kooky.

That’s why I said my post is called “Divorce Makes Baby Gaia Cry” and why it begins “Environmental scientists have a simple proposition. If you’re not willing to suffer silently in a loveless sham of a marriage for God, or for the children, won’t you at least suffer silently in a loveless sham of a marriage for the environment?”

BTW, have you heard my Jerry Falwell joke?

That does it. I need to do my part.
