Filed Under (MCB News, Business & Development) by Jackson Miller on 01-23-2008

I assume you are aware that MCB is moving to an editorial model (if not, read this). As part of that process I (Jackson Miller) have been given the honor / responsibility of acting as the Business & Technology Editor. The key word there is “editor” (well, I guess “business” and “technology” are pretty key too, but…)

You are the writers. If you have a post related to business or technology and live in the area, please let me know. One of the easiest ways to get a message to me is via Twitter (username jaxn).

So who am I? I am a Business Intelligence consultant (it is technology stuff) and small business owner (a partner in Plato’s Closet in Cool Springs and Murfreesboro). In addition I am working to launch a dotcom that provides statistics for bloggers.

I am looking forward to covering this beat for MCB. The economy is going to be exciting for the rest of 2008 (maybe a little too exciting). The housing market is just a couple of months from starting the busy season. Major investment brokers are recommending tech as a solid investment for 2008. However the tech companies are going through a trying time of decentralization as more and more control is handed over to the customers.

I guess what I am saying is that this is a really good time for you to share your thoughts about business and technology. The more thoughts you share the more I get to post here.

Oh, and by the way. I think I read something about having leeway to invite some guest commentary from time to time. Who knows, it may be like weekend blogging for Brittney without the $100.

That is all for now, but there should be more coming from me later today.

Congrats, Jackson! Now, could you find a minute and expand a little on the above?

Jackson Miller on 23 January, 2008 at 8:08 am #

Thanks Mack.

That power shift might make a good post. The summary is that control was first relinquished with content (blogs, youtube, etc). Now it is expanding to the peripheral data like usage stats, attention information, preferences, etc. Even search results will be influenced by users as Wikipedia and Mahalo challenge Google as an entry point.

I cannot think of another industry that has had to deal with that kind of shift.

Help me understand something…

Webloggers are constantly demanding respect from the mainstream media and claiming they should not be lumped in with traditional ways of doing things.

Now, here you are touting your emulation of the MSM model.

You seem to want it both ways.

Interesting, Jackson. I look forward to seeing that post.

John, i don’t see it that way. Individual bloggers do what they do, but aggregators may soon morph toward some type of model or format, and why completely disregard the entire MSM model? Some of it works, some of it doesn’t. Maybe a hybrid of sorts is a transitional structure until one is found that fits the best.

Jackson, I’m glad to see you here. Now will you teach me how to turn on my computer?
Seriously, so glad to be working with such esteemed company.

Interesting - I thought you were going somewhere completely different with the decentralisation theme. I figured you were talking about the imminent death of the corporate data center, which the trades have been screaming about for 10 years.

Or, from a personnel point of view, how the dedicated IT person is dwindling in importance to the person who has not only technical skills, but also is plugged in to the needs of the business.

I read InformationWeek way too much :)

I am SO happy that Jackson is on board at MCB!

There is so much I need to learn about the business technology side of things, it ain’t even funny… I’m with ‘Coma…if I could just get my printer to work on a consistent basis, I feel like it’s been a great day. lol

Stop hanging around so many luddites, ‘Coma & Ginger. ;)

Well, if nothing else, the metaphors are familiar. It’s definitely easier to design from an existing metaphor, but that’s no excuse to do it — the legitimate reason to do it is that it’s easier for users/consumers to accept and absorb an existing metaphor.

Truly revolutionary ideas are not only rare, they’re usually dependent on the context provided by familiar models in order to be useful.

Anyway, welcome to your new role, Jackson! You’re an ideal choice.

Slarti, personally, I like to keep my servers close. However, Cloud Computing definitely falls into that decentralization theme.

I’m really excited about your statistics for bloggers project. As much as like Wordpress, I don’t like that the statistics programs like StatCounter and SiteMeter that I used at Blogger don’t work well on the WP blogging platform. So…will your site work on WP and give me the stats that I can’t get now?

Jackson, This will be good. Thanks for taking on this role.

My thanks and welcome as well.
