Tgirsch from the Lean Left side of the world has some non-political proposals that should appeal to men, women, Christians, Wiccans (do Wiccans watch football?), Democrats, Republicans, and Paul-ites, beasts and children - that is if they care about NFL football.

If Tgirsch were the Emperor of the NFL he’d cut out that pesky, stupid, over-hyped extra week between the Championship games and the Super Bowl. Instant replay wouldn’t take so long. Cut back the pre-season games. Call offensive pass interference more often…He’s got more ideas at his place.

Personally, I’d eliminate the ‘fair catch’ and limit the number of times that LenDale White can run off-tackle per games. If I can see it coming from MY sofa, then I’m guessing most defensive coordinators and coaches probably pick up on it as well.

They should stop the fines against defensive backs for knocking the crap out of an unprotected receiver, and nothing has turned me off in recent years more than the “blow to the quarterback’s head” penalty. Either they are football players just like everybody else, or they need to be wearing a dress. Football is a violent game and those guys make big bucks. I want to see them get popped.

If they eliminated the fair catch, you’d have guys getting absolutely destroyed on punts. You’d increase the number of injuries without substantially increasing the excitement of the game.

You could split the difference, though, by making it illegal to take a knee in the end zone on kickoffs.

That also reminds me of another idea (goes to update).

Part of the elimination of the fair catch would give/encourage the receiver the option to let the ball go in order not to get creamed. Obviously this rule would only apply on punts.

The bygone XFL eliminated the fair catch without any mayhem or major injuries.

Also without any excitement. :) It didn’t really work in the XFL, I don’t see why it would work in the NFL.

Another reason I don’t like the idea of eliminating the fair catch because it eliminates yet another element of strategy from the game.

just exactly what’s the strategy of raising your hand so you don’t get creamed..better to reward a good punter
