Yesterday, Aunt B. wrote a post citing that she was on Twitter but she didn’t really get it.
I’m just going to admit it. I don’t get Twitter. To me, it’s like standing in Central Station shouting. Everyone hears you but… I don’t know. I keep doing it, waiting to understand what the big deal is and feeling kind of stupid because I don’t.
She makes a good point. Twitter is different.
It started a thread where people debated the good, the bad and the ugly of the social networking platform. The conversation basically was how can a Twitterite (my word) use 140 characters to convey a message.
Chris at My Quiet Life responded in a post about it as did Christian at Nashville is Talking.
If you are interested in Twitter, all three of these posts go into the pros and cons pretty well about it.
This morning, Nate wrote a breakdown about the advantages and disadvantages of his personal experience with social networking which I think also added to the conversation.
Like it. Hate it. It’s not going away. It may evolve into something else as technology often does but it’s here to stay.
Cartoon from here
Now, for t3h funnay: Anyone old enough to remember BITNET? It had an 80-char messaging protocol that was somewhat similar, except it was not stored anywhere — it was live, and you couldn’t specify users to track, but you could hold several private convos at once.
I guess it was really more like IM than Twitter. Whatever.
Thing is, we’re back to the future.

I think my take is pretty close to Wage’s. Basically Twitter’s OK for broadcasting the occasional random observation or brain-vent, and I can see the potential for specific one-off uses (like the following-the-Iowa-caucus experiment), but I couldn’t possibly keep up with the full-on stream of chatter on a daily basis.
I usually just hit the web page a few times a day and read whatever is still on page one.
I just don’t get twitter, I guess. Maybe I just need to have more thoughts or something. ![]()
I like Twitter sometimes but the thought occurred to me sometime back that does anybody care or need to know what I’m doing every second of the day and do I need to know what they ate for lunch? Y’know?
Plus, I had it coming to my cellphone and it kept running the battery down.
Twitter is a waste of time.
It might be handy in an earthquake or some other natural disaster.
I guess there had to be an alternative blogging source for those with AHDD.
Great new video posted last night by CommonCraft explaining what Twitter is and why people use it. Check it out at www.commomcraft.com or: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddO9idmax0o
(I have no affiliation with them, I just love their productions.)
