So what if the first hour of the expected two hour Lost season premiere was actually just a review of the last three years? The episode itself gave us more flash forwards in the first non-Jack-centric season opener, instead concentrating on good old Hugo Reyes. Although we did see Ben get a little more of what he’s got coming to him (did anybody else cheer when Rousseau whacked him?), this installment raised more questions than it answered.
(Spoilers if you haven’t seen it yet)
There’s been a lot of talk about Hurley’s visit to Jacob’s house, wondering what Christian Shephard was doing in the rocking chair, whose eye was that in the window, and who the Oceanic Six are, but Reba brought up something that hadn’t occurred to me:
Who is Naomi’s sister? (she looked a lot like Michael’s wife, but she is dead)
Knowing how people on or associated with those on the island don’t always stay injured or dead (think Locke in the mass grave, or Christian, if that really was him), this makes some sense. Could Susan have faked her death (we never did see her body)? Or maybe Naomi had been at sea and not heard of the death yet. Could she be Michael’s sister-in-law? Her mentioning her sister was too obvious for it not to mean something.
Although the episode was mostly about Hurley, Jack, and Locke, ‘Coma didn’t let Sawyer go unnoticed, mentioning his “hanging back with Hurley who had just learned of his best buddy Charlie’s death. We know Sawyer is a killer and scoundrel but it is the small moments like this that make the character interesting to me.” I’m stuck on thinking that the funeral nobody goes to is Sawyer’s, although the way everybody’s feeling about Locke now, I wonder if it might be his.
Lance Reddick made his first appearance as “Oceanic attorney” Matthew Abaddon. After seeing him as a conniving FBI agent in CSI: Miami, I knew his showing up meant nothing good. As if his conversation with Hurley wasn’t enough to make you suspicious of the man, Kat says, “The attorney for Oceanic is named after Satan. More specifically, he’s named after the Destroyer and guardian of the underworld.” Nasty namesake there.
Not everyone was analyzing the goings on in the South Pacific. Rae simply said, “It’s nice to have a fresh non-reality/game show on right now during this crap writer’s strike.” Ain’t that the truth. And Mari just wanted to mention “that Charlie looked good, damn good for… oh wait no spoilers. He looked good.” He did. The scene between he and Hurley may have been my favorite of the episode.
my favorite show currently on the air - excluding jon stewart and bill maher… (and project runway…)
The first hour was a recap episode and does not count against our eight new eps for the year..thank goodness. I’d riot in the streets if it did.
