Rob Shearer (and Kay Brooks also here) are reporting on the efforts by Rep. G.A. Hardaway (D-Memphis) to force homeschoolers and private schoolers to pass the public school’s Gateway exams to graduate.

You need to read their posts, but from what I see, Hardaway’s proposal sounds like the age old technique of forcing your way in (or out of) a gate by overwhelming the guard or gatekeeper . . . crashing the gate. Like most legislation, there’s more to this bill than meets the eye.

It sounds like to me that Hardaway is making some pretty nasty sausage.

What the?

He’s going to force private schoolers and homeschoolers to take the test in an attempt to do away with the test?

I don’t understand.

My son (private school) would actually love this. He loves tests. Duke TIP scholar that he is, he’s taking the ACT next year in the 6th grade. He begged me to let him take it THIS YEAR.

But back on point - What the?

Sorry SBF, I couldn’t tell if yours was a rhetorical question or not.

From Shearer’s post it appears that he was going to motivate Gateway supporters to fold by upping the ante (or heck, insert whatever metaphor you want) on the issue. Gateway supporters have done what Hardaway was after (lowering the quality assurance measures) by another means.

Congrats on your future merit scholar.
