The NFL landscape will be very different next year.

Brett Favre, long-time QB of the Green Bay Packers, announced his retirement this afternoon.  Favre said he felt he could still play, but was “mentally tired.”

Favre’s retirement comes after a year in which he broke NFL records for pass yards and touchdown passes in a career. Favre led the Packers to two Super Bowls, winning one.  He was a three-time MVP of the league and is surely a first-ballot Hall of Fame inductee.

Favre was a great player, a great guy and he’ll be sorely missed by Green Bay and football fans.

The time was right for Favre. There are a number of artciles populating the Internet lamenting the fact the Favre’s last pass was an interception. But in the end, it was time for Favre to go because the one thing that made him special was no longer in it–his heart.

I’ll miss watching him play. Thanks and keep up the good work here.

It appears that setting records was motivating him to play last season. I guess there’s nothing wrong with that, but it didn’t seem to be much discussed last year (as a motivation for him not retiring). Or did I miss that speculation/discussion?

In his retirement he’ll be forced to serve as the god of Green Bay…tough gig.

A couple of brett favre jokes:

God asks Peyton Manning first: “What do you believe?”

Peyton thinks long and hard, looks God in the eye, and says, “I believe in
hard work, and in staying true to family and friends. I believe in giving. I
was lucky, but I always tried to do right by my fans.”

God can’t help but see the essential goodness of Manning, and offers him a seat to his left.

Then God turns to Tony Romo and says, “What do you believe?”

Tony says, “I believe passion, discipline, courage and honor are the fundamentals of life. I, too, have been lucky, but win or lose, I’ve always tried to be a true sportsman, both on and off the playing fields.”

God is greatly moved by Tony’s sincere eloquence, and he offers him a seat to his right.

Finally, God turns to Brett Favre: “And you, Brett, what do you believe?”

Brett replies, “I believe you’re in my seat.”

and

God tells John Elway, “Because you have always been good and righteous, because you have always led by example and always abided by the strictest of moral standards, I have chosen for you, this house to live in.” Elway looks and sees this immaculate looking house with a swimming pool, a tennis court and many trees. He also sees a flagpole with a Denver Broncos logo on it. John Elway is very impressed and somewhat overwhelmed. That is, until he looks just beyond this house and sees another house many sizes bigger than his own, with many swimming pools, tennis courts, a golf course, and lots of pristine wooded area and a big Green Bay Packers flag hanging from a flagpole. All of a sudden, Elway is confused and more than a little disappointed. He then says to God, “I am very thankful for the house you have chosen for me, but why is Brett Favre’s house so much nicer than mine? God replies ” That isn’t Brett Favre’s house, that’s my house.”
