I tend to be a little cynical at times, which is why blogging about politics can be so much fun. And in that train of thought, Geraldine Ferraro (who was a candidate for the VP spot on the Democratic ticket some years back before her husband’s issues doused that chance for fame) made some public comments about Barack Obama. Ferraro believes that Barack Obama is only in the position he is in because of his race. Others have been out there with similar exposure and experience levels that haven’t gotten as far as Barack has, and she thinks he’s been favored because he’s black. She’s not retracting this statement (and I’m not saying she should, just to clarify things) and has gotten flack over it. (Pick a news site, any news site.) Kleinheider has links to local bloggers discussing this issue in depth.
But my favorite has to be Sean Braisted, just for the level of cynicism.
After listening to an interview with her, it appears she comes to this conclusion based on her own experiences of being an affirmative action appointment to the VP spot in 1984. The only problem with this is that no back room committee is picking Obama like they did Ferraro…millions of Americans are.
Geraldine Ferraro is an old school pol. The democrats ran her without vetting her background deeply enough. She has always been sour grapes about getting caught out with the dirty laundry.
Hillary is smart, hard working and devious.
I don’t know if Barack has what it takes to be president. But could we do worse than the current pretendsident (who, btw, just secured the “resigantion” of Centcom’s Admiral Fallon–who some say was the only one telling him attacking Iran would be a huge mistake).
I don’t believe that Obama has taken the lead in the democratic party because he’s black, but it would be disingenuous to say that this isn’t part of his appeal. I think it’s a reasonable statement to say that many people want to see someone other than a white guy elected president. I am one of those people. However, I don’t want to see someone elected to this position just BECAUSE he/she isn’t a white guy. And based on the issues, I won’t be voting for Barack, as I don’t believe the policies and proposals he has laid out in his speeches will do anything to correct the current problems we already face.
