While many (Obama-supporting) Americans are eager to move on from discussion of Rev. Wright’s endorsement of Barack Obama (and Obama’s endorsement of Rev. Wright’s theology), Newscoma has an insightful post about Gov. Bill Richardson’s endorsement of Obama. From her post:

The obvious reason that it is significant is that he used to work in the Clinton Administration. He is friends with the Clintons. But I think there is one thing about Richardson’s endorsement that is highly significant and that is Richardson is grounded and seems to be a voice of reason in this dead period before the next primary. I would have said the same thing if he had endorsed Hillary Clinton.

Sharon Cobb has also posted about the announcement:

This is significant for several reasons.First, Richardson worked in the Bill Clinton administration, and it was widely expected he would endorse Hillary.

Second, Richardson can help Obama with the Hispanic vote, one of the few groups where Obama isn’t strong.

Third, Richardson can swing some superdelegates.

Fourth, Richardson can help Obama win the states in the west.

Fifth, this is a big slap in the face to the Clintons. Richardson has been touted as the VEEP for Hillary, and now that’s not going to happen if she’s the nominee.

I have had a “running mate selection” post in the Drafts folder for quite a while . . . it hasn’t seemed relevant, but Sharon’s last point is a doozie.

That being said, I’m not sure that Hillary wouldn’t still pick Richardson. “Mending fences” and all. Plus the guy has major electoral appeal.

UPDATE:  David Oatney posts about Richardson’s courtesy call to the Clintons before endorsing Obama.  BTW, I’m impressed that he called ‘em.
