Okey dokie…but what are you doing?

Tuning up, maaaan. Tuning up.

fluffernutter on 2 June, 2008 at 11:28 am #

If it would help, I could demonstrate the safety features for a while, then hum Barry Manilow tunes…

Hungry, Hungry Dalek on 2 June, 2008 at 12:15 pm #

If it would help, I could demonstrate the safety features for a while, then hum Barry Manilow tunes…

DEMONSTRATE! DEMONSTRATE!
.

democommie on 2 June, 2008 at 3:37 pm #

fluffernutter:

I’m pretty sure that one of the safety features is a prohibition on Barry Manilow, Michael Bolton or Kenny G. “music” in any format.

Paul on 2 June, 2008 at 5:33 pm #

I’m wondering how many/few actually remember when ‘test patterns’ were common to TV broadcasters…some of you old people speak up *ahem*

democommie on 2 June, 2008 at 9:44 pm #

Paul:

I used to see them every day when I was growing up.

I remember watching the “sign offs” on the local channels where they would play “Taps” or “The Star Spangled Banner” and then–Test Pattern for four or five hours.

News 2 Me on 3 June, 2008 at 8:49 am #

The transmitter engineer would normally turn it on about 30 minutes before signon and we would begin broadcasting a test pattern much like the above about 15 minutes before signon. When we went color, we broadcast color bars. We had a standard text that I read over a station logo slide at actual signon time. The Star Spangled Banner or High Flight was normally shown at signoff. The transmitter was then turned off. No test pattern after signoff unless technical adjustments had to be made overnight.

Of course, with stations on 24/7 now, there’s never a signon/signoff.

Paul Chenoweth on 3 June, 2008 at 10:30 am #

Democommie, News 2 me,
I was there as well. Good memories. There was something about hearing the Star Spangled Banner as a station signed off that meant that it was OK to go to bed. Apparently, it is not OK to go to bed anymore *grin*

democommie on 3 June, 2008 at 11:54 am #

News2me is prolly right. But, back in the days when I still watched teevee I was often unconcious long before my eyes closed.

News 2 Me on 3 June, 2008 at 12:00 pm #

Nothing much has changed for you since then, either, commie.

democommie on 3 June, 2008 at 8:30 pm #

News2me:

Do I detect hostility?

Lynnster on 4 June, 2008 at 1:31 am #

Oh wow, I completely forgot about the Star Spangled Banner and the color bars. Boy, talk about a quick way to show one’s age when you remember those… gawd I’m old.

fluffernutter on 4 June, 2008 at 7:01 am #

~purposely not commenting on old stuff~

democommie on 4 June, 2008 at 7:38 am #

Speaking of “old stuff”:

A writer for the New Yorker was doing an article on “Muzak” and went to their corporate headquarters (a really, really big waiting room!) and told the person he was interviewing that while riding up on the elevator he heard “Honky Tonk Woman” on the Ambien sound system. He said “I thought you people only played “Old folks” music”. The interviewee replied, “Your point?”.

News 2 Me on 4 June, 2008 at 9:39 am #

A station where I worked once had the local MUZAK franchise and we distributed the programming over phone lines. The music was on tape and played by huge open reel tape machines.

The reels were 24 inches in diameter and held lord-only-knows how many feet of tape. Each had to be cued, started and rewound after play.

You’ve never seen such a mess as when the tape on a huge reel in full speed rewind breaks and tape starts flying everywhere. Been there. Cleaned up after that.

MCB deathwatch continues… ?

captain bringdown on 5 June, 2008 at 9:47 am #

Being in the funeral business;

“Would you prefer burial or cremeation?”

democommie on 5 June, 2008 at 10:05 am #

Capt. Bringdown:

“Cremeation”, is that like an “Afterlife Latte”?

You must have heard about the retired nurse out in TX who won an “All expenses paid trip to Hades” courtesy of the local funeral director in a contest.

dolphin on 5 June, 2008 at 10:14 am #

an “All expenses paid trip to Hades”

Considering the price of funerals, that’s quite a deal.

GingerSnaps on 5 June, 2008 at 10:27 am #

Relax, boys. I’m sure Ivy will give everybody an update on what’s going on soon.

Jack and Bobby K. on 6 June, 2008 at 2:38 pm #

and we will be waiting with baited breath to hear how everying, including the Kennedy murders and 9/11, are democommie’s fault.

democommie on 6 June, 2008 at 2:44 pm #

Forty years ago, today, Bobby Kennedy was murdered.

captain bringdown on 7 June, 2008 at 9:25 am #

Sorry ’bout the spelling. I’ve been off my meds! Now about these little green spiders crawling all over me…….DUH, HELP!!!

Southern Beale on 8 June, 2008 at 6:08 am #

OK, I’ve heard of extended vacations but this is ridiculous!!!

Jeffraham Prestonian on 9 June, 2008 at 6:16 am #

I’m having flashbacks to my abandonment issues.
.

News 2 Me on 9 June, 2008 at 1:34 pm #

Looks like ACK whipped ‘em into submission in less than a month.

Lynnster on 21 June, 2008 at 11:42 am #

Um…..?

Cookie on 24 June, 2008 at 9:17 am #

What is going on here? I must have missed the post with the explanation in it about MCB going on a (semi??) permanent hiatus.

Can someone explain?

thanks!

Pete on 9 July, 2008 at 9:17 am #

So you let democommie kill another blog. Apparently you did not learn from NIT.

RIP

Busy Mom on 9 July, 2008 at 9:28 am #

Can I sit by, now?

democommie on 9 July, 2008 at 7:43 pm #

Pete:

Yeah, I’ve got that kind of power. You bet.

HBK on 10 July, 2008 at 11:03 am #

I tell you, that democommie has the whole blogosphere under his thumb.

Paul Chenoweth on 10 July, 2008 at 1:07 pm #

The way that demmocommie talks down to bloggers…(oh, is this mic on?)

Emmett Flatus on 10 July, 2008 at 2:29 pm #

Yep, the mic is on, but it matters not since democratcommunist has very selective hearing.

democommie on 10 July, 2008 at 10:54 pm #

Ummm, Emmett:

First off, I’m not a democratic communist. Secondly, I only talk down to morons.

Number9 on 14 July, 2008 at 1:53 pm #

Catherine had the right idea. Sometimes you have to draw a clear line in the sand. When you try to please everyone this is what happens.

Jilly on 22 July, 2008 at 8:09 pm #

I guess it is time to take a casserole over to MCB’s house. :(

democommie on 22 July, 2008 at 10:09 pm #

Jilly:

MCB has next of kin? Well, you can always visit any number of other folks that used to post here.

[…] (Pete prolly has the right take…) […]

hbk on 5 August, 2008 at 2:06 pm #

Folks, does anyone care that the U.S.A is turning into a fascist dictatorship?

Do you really think that terrorism is a treat to “our very way of life”?

Well, I guess it is, but only if you allow yourself to be terrorized into voluntarily giving up that way of life.

William has been right all this time and the spineless wimp hyperlocal blogosphere refused to stand up for the truth. Now its almost too late to save our Republic.

Thanks. Thanks a lot.

democommie on 6 August, 2008 at 11:05 am #

hbk:

It’s never too late. Well, then again, maybe it is, but Paris Hilton was on the morning news shows; man, she’s like so hot and rich and picked-on. Maybe William should write a few posts about Paris instead of boring everyone with the truth. I mean, I go there, but it’s pretty obvious that none of the knuckle-draggers that frequent the reichwing blogs have any interest in debating him.

jack@bobby k on 6 August, 2008 at 11:56 am #

If you haven’t seen this,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjALf12PAWc

you are officially clueless.

Of course, if you aren’t the one being harassed and intimidated, it isn’t happening, right?

democommie on 6 August, 2008 at 1:55 pm #

jack@bobby k:

I haven’t seen it (at 47:+ minutes, I would have a hard time sitting through it) but I don’t think I need to see the handles to know that the reichwing is carrying this country to hell in a handbasket.

jack & bobby k on 6 August, 2008 at 4:34 pm #

I didn’t mean that you specifically were clueless.

But you really should check it out, because most people even the staunchest anti-Bushies have no idea how close to that hell we actually are, and that we don’t have much time to intervene effects, and pie in the sky fantasies that a mere election will end the crisis are the height of folly.

Number9 on 8 August, 2008 at 9:54 am #

Folks, does anyone care that the U.S.A is turning into a fascist dictatorship?

Katherine was right. When you try to please everyone this is what happens.

democommie on 9 August, 2008 at 9:57 am #

Nuked4.5/5 of 20:

Gosh, you already said that and it was witless the first time.

serr8d on 10 August, 2008 at 1:01 am #

I managed 6 minutes. Similar to Jonah Goldberg’s Liberal Fascism, only bereft of footnotes and higher-level logic and reason.

Does Naomi channel Jesus Christ later in this video?

democommie on 10 August, 2008 at 5:26 am #

jack@bobby k:

You’ve done well, attracting two of the finest non-minds (Nutjob 12-3 and Serrain’t) to the fray.

Oh, yeah, that Jonah Goldberg is a genius.

Paul Chenoweth on 11 August, 2008 at 1:44 pm #

I just wanted to make it an even 50 comments.

Number9 on 12 August, 2008 at 9:08 pm #

Gosh, you already said that and it was witless the first time.

I wasn’t talking to you. I spent a lot of time and effort on this blog and you should have been cut off. So far you have bored two Nashville blogs to death.

What was gained?

serr8d on 12 August, 2008 at 10:17 pm #

Number9, at least that little fuckshit hasn’t shown his face at TennesseeFree.

He knows what awaits him if he does.

democommie on 13 August, 2008 at 6:22 am #

Oh, you two rootin’ tootin’ badasses scare me to death. What a pair of asshat morons.
